Matthew Petering is an Associate Professor of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and owner of District Solutions LLC, a Milwaukee-based redistricting consulting company. He has more than 20 years of experience developing computer algorithms to optimize the performance of seaports, warehouses, universities, and high-speed railway, car-sharing, and healthcare systems. His academic research has been published in journals such as Transportation Science, Transportation Research B, European Journal of Operational Research, International Journal of Production Economics, and Computers and Operations Research. In 2019, Dr. Petering began developing a computer algorithm for redistricting named FastMap. The algorithm allowed him to make six amicus curiae submissions to the Wisconsin Supreme Court in the redistricting case Clarke v. Wisconsin Elections Commission in 2023-24. Dr. Petering received a BA in mathematics from Washington University in Saint Louis and a PhD in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan.
